Great Demand for Waste Paper and Waste Paper Recycling Technology China's Paper Industry

China's virgin fiber resource is very poor. Paper making by using waste paper could reduce energy consumption, lower plant-building investment and pollution treatment project investment, and meet the recycling economy. The support by the Chinese government in the industrial policy has promoted the development of paper making by using waste paper.

Great Demand of Waste Paper

In 2004, the consumption of waste paper in China was 28.8 million tons. That breaks down to 16.51 million tons for photodomestic waste paper and 12.3 million tons for imported waste paper. The recycling rate of waste paper was 33.4% and the usage rate was 58.2%. Waste paper pulp accounts for 52% among the total paper pulp. The imports of waste paper approximately reaches a half of the world trade volume of waste paper.

Waste paper is mainly imported from the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, China Hong Kong, etc. Waste paper imported from the United States to China accounts for about 50% in the total waste paper exports in America.

In 2005, many newly-built and expansion projects of paper and paper board have been put into production. Among them, newspaper, patent-coated board, case board and corrugating medium have used most of waste paper as fiber material. The raised output of those four kinds of paper will reach above 8 million tons. The demand of waste paper will increase substantially.

Great Demand for Waste Paper Recycling Technology, Machinery and Paper Chemicals

As the waste paper recycling technology has developed, waste paper pulp could be used in large and high-speed paper machines to produce high-grade paper. China is now pressing for the establishment of waste paper recycling market systems, demanding modern waste paper collecting, selecting, treating and de-inking technologies and machinery, and highly efficient paper chemicals. China has a large potential market for waste paper.
