Prosperous Development of China's Paper Industry Driven by Sustainable Market Demand

Paper making is a traditional industry with a long history in China. Since 1985, the consumption of paper and paper board in China has seen an annual growth rate of 12%. This sustainable market demand has created a boom for China's paper industry.

In 2004, the total output of paper and paper board in China was 49.5 million tons and the consumption was 54.39 million tons. Both the production and consumption have a sustainable and steady growth, ranking second in the world after the United States. China's paper products market and investment keep demand brisk.

In 2004, the import of paper and paper board was 6.14 million tons, the import of pulp was 7.32 million tons, and the import of waste paper was 12.3 million tons. The import of pulp and waste paper increased substantially. The imported fiber material accounted for 38.5 % of total fiber material used in China's paper industry.

In 2004, the output of paper and paper board in the eastern area of China, consisting of 12 provinces and municipalities, was equal to 72.8% of China's total output, with the growth rate of 0.3 percent over the previous year.

The Area Distribution of China Paper Industry in 2004

Although the Chinese paper Industry has made great progress, judging from the 42 kg consumption of paper and paper board per capita per year in China, it is approximately 80% of the global annual per capita consumption level which is far lower than 200-300 kg of developed countries. Therefore, there is great development potential for the paper making industry in China. China's paper making market and investment keep demand high. It also becomes obvious that the modernization of China's paper industry requires advanced technologies, equipment and relevant fittings of machinery and raw material.

The International Exhibition & Conference for the Pulp, Paper Making and Paper Products Industries in China will establish the best information exchange and trade negotiation platform for you and your Chinese customers. China Paper Shanghai is the premier meeting place for Asia's pulp, paper making and paper products industries.
